چکیده

IN the course of experiments on the treatment of radiation injury it became necessary to obtain lymphocytes from the thoracic duct of mice. A method for collectiiig lymph from the thoracic duct of unanaesthetized mice has been described by Shrewsbury (1959). In the present paper a modification of his method is described which, it is felt, has certain advantages. With this method the daily output of lymphocytes in unanaesthetized mice has been determined together with the effect on this output of prolonged drainage from the fistula.

The recirculation of lymphocytes from blood to lymph in the rat.

In all the mammalian species which have so far been examined, large numbers of lymphocytes enter the blood each day from the main lymphatic vessels in the neck (reviewed by Yoffey & Courtice, 1956). In the rat, for example, enough lymphocytes enter the blood from the thoracic duct to replace all those in the blood about 11 times daily (Gowans, 1957a). This is a minimum estimate of the actual da...

An Inquiry into Some Mechanical Factors in the Production of Lymphocytosis

1. The lymph of the thoracic duct furnishes to the blood a larger proportion than is usually supposed of the lymphocytes in circulation. Gross variations in its output of such cells must affect very considerably the blood picture. 2. The quantity of lymphocytes supplied through the thoracic duct of the healthy dog remains practically constant from hour to hour, if the physiological conditions a...

Lymphopoiesis and lymphocyte recirculation in the sheep fetus

The production and the circulation of lymphocytes has been examined in the sheep fetus where neither foreign antigen nor immunoglobulins occur. It was found that as the lymphoid organs increased in size during fetal life, the numbers and the output of lymphocytes in the thoracic duct lymph increased. The recirculating pool of lymphocytes was estimated to be 5.5 +/- 1.5 X 10(8) cells in fetal la...

Experimental thoracic duct fistula; observations on lymphocyte output.

By WILLIAM W. L. GLENN, M.D., FRANCIS X. BAUER, M.D., AND SAMUEL L. CRESSON, M.D. SINCE the adaptation of polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene to the making of cannulae, several investigators’ ‘ have been able to produce thoracic duct fistulae in the dog which are free-flowing for as long as 8 days. Thus is provided, for the first time, a means for continuing observations on the lymphocyte outpu...

Specific Unresponsiveness of Cells from Lymphoid Organs of Mice Primed with Heterologous Erythrocytes*

Small lymphocytes from the thoracic duct lymph of rats (1) and mice (2) can initiate immune responses to antigens such as sheep erythrocytes and histoincompatible cells when transferred to appropriate hosts. Recently, it was demonstrated that for 1-2 days after the injection of such antigens in mice (3) or rats (4, 5), there was a specific deficiency in thoracic duct lymph of cells able to moun...
